　　1. break away (from)

　　(1) 突然逃跑或離開。

　　The thief broke away from the policeman. 小偷逃離了警察。

　　(3) 擺脫(舊習慣)，擺脫(舊做法)。

　　2. break down

　　(1) (機器、車輛等)壞了。

　　3. break in

　　(1) 突然進來，強行進去。

　　He broke in and stole my money. 他闖進來偷了我的錢。

　　The secretary broke in to say that a telegram had just arrived. 秘書插話說剛收到電報。

　　注：上述用法 break in 它通常不如物，但有時也被用作物動詞，用賓語說：訓練某人（物），使某人（物）適應。

　　He is breaking in the new man as a machine operator. 我在訓練新工人操作機器。

　　4. break into

　　(1) 強行進入。

　　The thieves planned to break into a bank. 這些小偷計劃闖入銀行。

　　注：break into 與 break in 有時意思是一樣的，但前者通常是及物，后者通常是不及物。

　　5. break off

　　(1) 停止說話。

　　He broke off in the middle of a sentence. 他一句話也沒說完就停了下來。

　　(2) 暫停，休息。

　　Let’s break up for a rest. 讓我們休息一下。

　　(3) (使)折斷。

　　The mast has (been) broken off. 桅桿斷了。

　　6. break out (火災、戰爭等)突然發生或爆發。

　　A fire broke out during the night. 火災發生在夜間。

　　The 2nd World War broke out in September, 1939. 1939年9月，第二次世界大戰爆發。

　　Influenza usually breaks out in winter. 冬季常發生流感。

　　7. break through

　　(1) 突破，有重要創意。

　　Scientists say they’re beginning to break through in the fight against cancer. 科學家們說，他們開始在預防和治療癌癥方面取得突破。

　　(2) 克服，征服。

　　You must try to break through your shyness. 你必須努力克服羞怯。

　　(3) 強行通過(進入)。

　　The enemy’s defences were strong but our soldiers broke through. 敵人的防線很艱難，但仍然是我軍的突破。
