提高英語閱讀能力的基礎是什么?

句子雖然不長，但很難。句子不僅包含表語從句，還包括條件狀語從句，而且在從句部分使用虛擬語氣。句子的大意是：衡量一個人真正素質的標準是看他知道自己不會被別人發現時所做的事情。

二是結構異常引起的難句。所謂結構異常，是指句子成分的排列不按正常詞序排列。在這種情況下，學生應該考慮將異常語序恢復到正常語序。一般來說，語序異常的原因有很多，比如強調的原因，上下文連貫的原因等等。請看從高考閱讀真題中選出的一句話:

Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups.

這句話雖然不長，但不容易理解。首先，它是一個含有倒裝結構的句子。正常的結構應該是before 1066, peoples belonging to two major language groups lived in the land we now call Great Britain. 另外，句子中還含有作定語的分詞短語belonging to two major language groups和定語從句wee now call Great Britain。全句大意是：1066年以前，在我們現在稱之為英國的土地上，住著兩個主要語言的民族。

第三，省略造成的難句。有些句子可能不難完全寫出來，但在某些語境中省略了一些成分后就變得困難了。在這種情況下，學生應該考慮補充可能省略的成分。請看一句話:

Bob and Annie had not known each other long before they became eager to get married: Bob because he was interested in Annied’s beauty and Annie because she was interested in Bob’s money.

句子的后半部分 Bob because he was interested in Annied’s beauty and Annie because she was interested in Bob’s money 因為省略而變得難以理解，事實上，它的完整形式應該是 Bob became eager to get married because he was interested in Annied’s beauty and Annie became eager to get married because she was interested in Bob’s money. 句意為：Bob 和 Annie 很快他們就急于結婚了，其中 Bob 是因為看上去了 Annie 的美麗，而 Annie 則是看上了 Bob 的錢。
